Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease eight times more likely to occur in women than men. It is characterized by long-term loss of calcium from the bones especially the bones of the hip, spine, wrist and legs. The bones gradually become brittle and are susceptible to fracture and breakage. The protective effect of calcium on bone mass is one of the few health claims permitted by the FDA. Vitamin D is essential to the absorption of calcium and the deposit of calcium into the bones. Lysine supplementation increases the absorption of calcium and may reduce its excretion. As a result some researchers believe that lysine may eventually be shown to have a role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Other nutrients that may affect the prevention of osteoporosis are soy, and the minerals magnesium and zinc.
